How Alcohol Affects Weight Loss

Are you trying to lose weight but can't get it off? Are you stuck?  If so, alcohol could be holding you back in more ways than one!

"The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool." Richard Feynman

Most people think drinking each night won't hurt them. They often don't associate the weight gain from adding alcohol to our diets.

After reading this article, you will know how alcohol affects your weight:

When trying to lose weight, it is essential to remember that alcohol sabotages your efforts.

Know the facts and form your own opinion. Numerous studies have proven that alcohol:

  1. Increases your appetite; studies show that people eat up to 30% more calories. These calories are not the healthy kind, usually fried and fatty foods.

  2. It slows down your metabolism, making your body hold on to fat stored in the abdomen (belly fat).

  3. Increases caloric intake from the drink alone as most alcoholic beverages are at least 150 - 300 calories per drink. Most people drink more than one, especially in social situations.

  4. Impedes your sleep. We know that sleep is vital to weight loss. By getting more high-quality sleep, you will drop the pounds more quickly.

  5. It is linked to many other adverse health outcomes. Know what your risk factors are.

While it isn't necessary to completely cut alcohol out of your diet if you are trying to lose weight, you may want to go cold turkey and see the results for yourself.

If you decide to drink during your diet, consider only having one low-calorie drink, at most twice a week.  Seek progress, not perfection.

If you are trying to lose weight, remember that alcohol:

•Increases your appetite

•Slows down your metabolism

•Increases caloric intake

•Impedes your sleep

•Linked to other adverse health outcomes

•Try deep breathing to relax and unwind.
